Work Experience

1980-1983   Lab Tech / Technical Asst, General Portland Inc, New Braunfels, TX 

He was responsible for conducting analytical bench chemistry, physical testing and mix control in a cement plant.  He was involved in the plant startup and was responsible for monthly physical inventories of all raw materials.  After being promoted to Technical Assistant he worked in a supervisory capacity in production, maintenance and the laboratory.


1983-1988  Supv. Chemist/Jr Process Engineer, General Portland Inc, Ft Worth, TX 

He was responsible for supervising all phases of cement laboratory testing including analytical bench chemistry, X-ray calibrations, mix control, and physical testing.  Andy was later promoted to a corporate position as a Junior Process Engineer responsible for designing chain systems for all General Portland plants with long kilns.


1988-1991   Process Engineer, Florida Crushed Stone, Brooksville, FL   

He coordinated and conducted process studies on equipment groups within the plant. He also assisted with the startup of a 105 MW steam turbine power plant on site and a fluidized bed lime calcination plant.


1991-1997   Process Manager, Lafarge Corp, Whitehall, PA   

Andy was responsible for all process improvement projects at the plant. He implemented a tire burning program that achieved a 30% fuel substitution in two preheater kilns, and built four, low NOx, three-circuit burners for Lafarge.


1997-2001   Sr. Corporate Engineer, Centex Construction Products, Dallas, TX   

He was responsible for process studies, mill audits, coordinating and facilitating corporate quality control seminars, and assisting 4 cement plants and 3 gypsum wallboard plants with quarry exploration and drilling programs.  Additional duties included performing reserve calculations, preparing mining plans, and conducting heat/mass balances on clinker coolers, kiln systems, roller mills, and finish mills. 


2001-2010   Sr. Process Eng / Sr. Consultant, PENTA Engineering, St Louis, MO   

Andy has worked for US and international clients providing operations training and process troubleshooting in almost every area of a cement plant.  He has worked closely with the Portland Cement Association (PCA) developing and presenting training programs for raw materials preparation, kiln and preheater systems, coal mills, clinker coolers, cement mills and environmental controls. Most of the training programs are conducted at plant sites for maximum benefit to the client. He has been involved with feasibility studies for greenfield plants and for specific equipment upgrade projects in existing facilities. 


2010-present   President, Head Cement Consulting, LLC, Keller, TX   

Andy started a consulting firm in early 2010 that caters primarily to the cement and lime industries. He has conducted ball mill audits and energy audits as well as provided consulting for his former employee since starting Head Cement Consulting.



Publications

He has published three papers and presented them at IEEE cement industry technical conferences. He has also authored or co-authored several Technical Papers for PCA and is a co-author for PCA’s Recommended  Guidelines for Solid Fuel Use in Cement Plants and to Innovations in Portland Cement Manufacturing. Andy has also published two articles for cement industry publications.
